SUMMERSIDE(PE) – February 27, 2012 – The Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival will be recognizing the Military History of Prince Edward Island as part of the 2012 schedule of activities. The festival will he held over the Canada Day long weekend, beginning June 28th and running until July 2nd.

Atlanticade's base location will be in Summerside and will see a number of activities that will expose participants to the Island's military past. Daily organized rides hosted by members of the Canadian Army Veterans (CAV) motorcycle group will see participants escorted into Charlottetown to visit the historic PEI Regiment Museum. CAV members will also escort visitors to the aviation historic site at the entrance to Slemon Park as part of a suppertime dining experience at the former Canadian Forces Base property.

On Friday the PEI Military Family Service Centre will be hosting a “Red Friday Rally” inside the War Veterans Convention Centre located at Credit Union Place which serves as the headquarters for the festival.

Then on Sunday, Canada Day, there will be a parade lead by the CAV members and featuring local cadets along with current and former members of the Armed Forces. The parade will run through downtown Summerside and end at Legion Branch #5 for a Canada Day celebration.

On the last day CAV members will lead the Parade of Iron Horses from Atlanticade headquarters in Summerside to the Legion Branch in Borden.

Festival chairman Dale Hicks says the focus on the military history of the Island will be a nice addition to Atlanticade's first event on PEI. “Given the fact the Island is the birthplace of confederation and our event is being held on the Canada Day long weekend these activities will expose our participants to the military role the Island played early on in the history of the country”.

This marks the 6th year for Atlanticade and Hicks says early registrations indicate it should be the best attended to date, weather permitting. “So far there are registered participants from P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia as well as the states of Maine and Mass. New York and Virginia, U.S.A.” stated Hicks.

Organizers have attended motorcycle trade shows in recent weeks in Toronton, Boston, Moncton and Halifax in an effort to promote this year's festival. “The feedback is really positive and I am amazed had how many people have a connection in some manner with PEI. Many of them are looking at our event as a great opportunity to make a return visit” added Hicks.
